Yahoo Will Shut Down Beijing Office and Quit China

The tech giant has announced its plans to close its last office in China as part of its new cost-cutting strategy. 

According to media reports, shutdown of Yahoo’s research and development in Chinese office will cut 200 to 300 jobs. 

The California-based company confirmed that it notified employees about the closure a few days ago. In fact, Yahoo has cut staff elsewhere in its attempt to keep up with the Internet market’s transition to portable devices instead of desktop computers.

Leaving China follows the company’s announcement made in January about its intentions to spin off its stake in Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba. By the way, the latter listed on the New York Stock Exchange in a record offer back in 2014. 

Nine years earlier, in 2005, Yahoo acquired a 40% stake in Alibaba for $1bn and turned over control of its China operations to the group. However, Yahoo stopped offering its services in the country in 2013.

The financial experts point out that Yahoo’s profit for the most recent quarter fell twice compared to a year earlier, with the company’s revenue dipping just 1%.

Robot 225 Thousand Sold During 2014

Sales of industrial robots in the world increased by 27 percent in 2014. This increase was driven by demand from the automotive and electronics industries, especially in China and South Korea.
Quoted by Reuters, the Federation of International Robot (IFR) said about 225 thousand robots were sold during 2014, nearly two-thirds of them are sold in Asia. Domestic robot suppliers in China said on 56 thousand robots were sold in China, about 16 thousand came from domestic suppliers. The rest, supplied from foreign suppliers such as from Switzerland, Germany, and Japan.
China has a ratio of 30 robot robotic circuitry than 10 thousand manufacturing workers. This comparison is lower than in Korea. Now, China seeks to increase the use of robots because of high inflation led to higher wages. This has an impact on the competitiveness of human labor.
Last year, the biggest market of robots namely China, South Korea, Japan, USA and Germany. Fifth markets represent 75 percent of global sales of robots.

Amazon Begin Use "Drone" to Send Goods

Amazon finally started to ship items using drones customer orders. Delivery using new drone applied as a test only.
The company's largest e-commerce United States (US), it has been revealed plans to use drones delivery since 2013 ago. 

However, a trial license from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded on Thursday (03/19/2015) local time.
As KompasTekno quoted by Reuters on Friday (20/03/2015), FAA provides airworthy certificate at the business unit Octocopter Amazon and prototype drones to operate in the vicinity of his personal as well as rural area in the state of Washington.
In addition, the FAA also provide other restrictions. The certificate is only valid on certain drones. Amazon must submit a new certification if they make modifications or use another drone models.
Drone that deliver the ordered items will have to fly at an altitude below 120 meters. They also have to maintain the position of drones in order to remain visible.
Drone operator must have to qualify for special requirements. They are required to have a private pilot's license and certificate of the latest medical condition. Amazon also must deposit the monthly data to the government.
Ambition "drone" Amazon
Step Amazon utilizing drones for the delivery of goods has been revealed since 2013 ago. The goal is to increase the speed of service delivery.
The company led by Jeff Bezos is using drones named Octocopter for short-haul flights. Amazon ensure that deliveries can be made within 30 minutes if using these tools.

Microsoft is also working with the Xiaomi to provide trial versions of Windows 10 in products smartphone from the Android device manufacturers.

Google Plus Finally overhauled

Google Plus social media been recast in the form of separation of photo features of the service.

Google Follow Celebrating International Women's Day

Google always appreciate the great days of celebration. For example, today, Sunday, March 8, 2015 which is the International Women's Day.

Protest, Google Cancel Prohibition Porn Content Blogger

Google plans to narrow the space for pornographic content creators on the Blogger service with blogspot domain.  

But the real, after protests, the cancellation rules apply.
Google has previously insisted would 'eliminate' pornographic content on Blogspot, by making the pages included in private mode, which means it will not be seen by other users other than by the creator.
"If your blog is still showing nude and explicit content, after the date of March 23, 2015 your content will not be removed but will be converted to private mode," Google wrote on February 25 last.
But the lapse of three days after announcing it, Google immediately rectify these rules. Previous threats loudly voiced canceled implemented.
"This week we announced a new policy regarding pornographic content. We received a lot of input, and some of which have an account more than 10 years," said Google Social Product Support Manager, Jessica Pelegio.
"Rather than implementing changes (prohibition), we have decided to improve the enforcement of prohibition policies on commercial pornographic content," said Pelegio, which is written in the official announcement on the Google page, Saturday (28/2).

Google's Blogger reverses porn policy after user backlash

Apparently Google bloggers like to post porn. A lot.Just three days after saying sexually explicit material would be banned from public Blogger forum sites, Google is backing down. 

Faced with "a ton of feedback," Google said Friday that it instead will "step up enforcement" against commercial and illegal porn.

Google spokeswoman Katie Watson said the company does not disclose how many Blogger users it has nor how many of them would have been affected by the policy change.

On Tuesday, Google warned Bloggers that effective March 23 any site hosting nude pictures would be switched to private mode — only available to the authors and invited viewers. 

That ban came the same day that social forum and news site Reddit said it would remove explicit photos, videos and links if the person pictured hadn't consented to the image being posted.

In an online post Friday, Google's Blogger said longtime users thought it was unfair to suddenly change the policy. The company also was swayed by users who say posting sexually explicit content is part of expressing their identities.

Sexually explicit content on Blogger will still be marked by an "adult content" warning. And Google's Blogger policy does not allow users to post nudes or sexually explicit images of someone else without that person's consent.

Mountain View, California-based Google Inc. bought Blogger in 2003. It was created by a company founded by Evan Williams, who would go on to co-found Twitter.

Blogging platforms have different approaches to porn and nudity. WordPress permits "mature content," but excludes it from public areas of the service and does not allow pornographic material such as "explicit sexual acts.

" Photo-heavy Tumblr, now a part of Yahoo, says "sexual or adult-oriented content" must be flagged as "Not Suitable for Work" and does not allow for the embedding of sexually explicit video. Medium, also founded by Evan Williams, says flat-out: "No porn."

New Social Media Opini.id Offers 'Polling' Feature

A new local information-based social media Opini.id is surfing into waves of social media euphoria in Indonesia by offering Polling feature. 

Opini.id describes itself as a social media that encourage internet users to share their statements, opinions, questions, and comments on issues. 

“It enables people who are curious of an issue to get accurate answer,” said the founder and Editor in Chief of Opini.id, Indra Bigwanto in Jakarta, on Thursday, February 26.

According to Indra, polling will also becomes a helpful tool for students or companies who are working on research. Topics mostly surfaced on the Polling include issues on poverty, family, and national issues.

Opini.id was officially launched in October 2014. It is a transformation of a news portal called Opini.co.id which was founded in 2012.

“Opini.id is a combo of social media and news portal,” Indra added.

For its contents, the social media is cooperating with Antara and research body Katadata. There will be mobile apps available in the next one month.

BestBuy.com back online after second Black Friday outage

Best Buy Co Inc's retail website is back online after it was down for a second time on Black Friday, the busiest U.S. shopping day in terms of sales and traffic since 2005, according to ShopperTrak. 

"A concentrated spike in mobile traffic triggered issues that led us to shut down BestBuy.com in order to take proactive measures to restore full performance," the company said in a statement on its corporate website. 

Best Buy's website was also down briefly earlier on Friday morning.

Hackers force message on websites via US firm

A U.S. firm that helps connect more than 700 companies with customers through social media says a Syrian group hacked the company's web address to upload a message to other websites.

Gigya CEO Patrick Salyer outlined what happened in a blog published Thursday.

At around 6:45 a.m. Eastern Time, the company discovered "sporadic failures with access to our service," Salyer wrote.

The executive said hackers had rerouted Internet traffic from Gigya's website to an outside computer server. That server generated a message to visitors that their site had been hacked by the Syrian Electronic Army.
Published reports noted the message appeared on websites for several UK newspapers, CNBC and the National Hockey League.

The message also showed up briefly on some retail sites just as they prepared for the biggest shopping day of the year on Friday. The National Retail Federation did not immediately comment Thursday.
Still, the issue appeared to be resolved quickly.

The hackers rerouted Gigya's web traffic by tweaking the company's web address on Internet registry Whois.com so that it would point visitors to the outside server. The registry entry on Whois.com was fixed about an hour after the company detected the breach, Salyer said.

Even so, the executive sought to reassure the company's clients.

"To be absolutely clear: Neither Gigya's platform itself nor any user, administrator or operational data has been compromised and was never at risk of being compromised," he wrote.

The Syrian Electronic Army aligns itself with Syrian President Bashar Assad. It has previously taken credit for hacking media sites like E! Online and the BBC.

Facebook building 'workplace network'

Facebook at Work will look similar to its existing social network, but users will be able to keep their personal profiles separate, the paper says.

They also would be able to chat with colleagues, build professional networks and share documents, people said to be working on it told the Financial Times.

Facebook has been contacted by the BBC.

A spokesman said the company would respond later today.

The product, said to be in use internally at Facebook already, could be a strong competitor to existing services such as Google Drive, Microsoft Office and LinkedIn.

LinkedIn, which launched in 2003, is currently the largest professional network, with 332 million users in more than 200 countries, according to its website. 

Facebook recorded 1.35 billion monthly active users in September 2014 - but some employers remain sceptical about the usefulness of social media at work, and many have banned it in the office.

'Weak ties'
 
"Facebook at Work is likely to bring some benefits to companies - but not the ones they think," said Prof Andre Spicer, of Cass Business School.

"It is unlikely to make employees more productive, but it will help them to be more connected and aware.

"Social media sites like Facebook help employees to build 'weak ties'. 

"These are people we would talk to infrequently and don't know intimately.
"These weak ties are often a source of important background information."
Prof Spicer added that the new tool could also cause problems.

"It makes it easier for employees to accidentally leak sensitive information.
"It can also be a threat to hierarchy and clash with implicit or explicit chains of command."

Like its parent site, Facebook at Work could also end up being a time-consuming distraction, he warned.

"Communication which could easily be dealt with face to face is pushed online - adding another potential source of information overload," he said.

"It can also mean employees spend more time polishing their Facebook profile than actually working."

Facebook at Work: Why the Social Network is Targeting the Enterprise Dollar

Facebook has a user base of 1.35 billion people. That is one in every 5.5 people on the planet having a Facebook account.

It is also making money - lots of it. In it's most recent earnings report, the company revealed that it had generated $1.4 billion (£900 million) in profit from $3.2bn in revenue for the three months to the end of September - figures which were up 90% and 60% respectively.

So suggestions that Facebook is in trouble and needs to look to new markets in order to bolster its business model seems slightly ludicrous.

However, with the number of new young users shrinking in the last three years, it is clear that the decade-old social network is changing and this is the reason that the company is reportedly moving into the enterprise space.

Banned

On Monday the Financial Times reported several companies were testing a Facebook at Work product which is a combination of Yammer, Google Docs and Facebook.

The product is aimed at allowing employees work and communicate online together and while it would still feature the Facebook name, newsfeeds and groups, the product would be a world away from the Facebook which 1.35 billion of us use.

The number of people that use Facebook on a daily basis is huge (864 million in September 2014, up 19% on last year) - but it could potentially be a lot higher.

Last year a report by Easynet Global Services and Ipanema Technologies found that in the US 69% of companies restricted access to Facebook.

That is a significant amount of potential ad revenue which Facebook is losing out on every single day.

Slowing growth

The headline figures may suggest that this is not hurting the company's bottom line much, but look beneath the surface and a more worrying trend becomes clear.

According to figures from eMarketer, Facebook's ad revenue growth is expected to go from over 60% in 2014, to just 27% in 2015 and 22% in 2016.

While this is no crisis, it is an indication of slowing growth for Facebook and its work-focused product could be a long-time solution to this trend.

As Facebook's user base grows older, the social network which started life as a way for college friends to connect will mature to reflect its user base and will want to offer services which are relavent to them.

So a Facebook at Work product sounds like an ideal solution.

It will potentially give it access to a huge swathe of the enterprise market where it is currently banned, allowing it to sell a lot more corporate-focused ads.

Will it work?

The problem for Facebook is one of perception.

While LinkedIn is widely seen as a legitimate business tool - Facebook is not. Google Docs is seen as a safe and efficient way of collaborating online - Facebook is not.

Major concerns for businesses using any online tool are privacy and security, an area where Facebook has a lot of work to do - and that's just on the consumer side. 

Getting businesses to trust it to handle sensitive and valuable corporate information is going to be a major undertaking.

Facebook at Work sounds like a smart move by the social network, but whether or not it will work will entirely depend on how successful Facebook is at convincing companies it can keep their sensitive data safe.

That was the cutting remark from one well-dressed speaker I overheard backstage at this year's Web Summit which took place in Dublin over the last week.

Wi-Fi - or the lack of it - was the main talking point among attendees, on Twitter and even on Irish radio reports throughout the week, which is a shame as there was so much more interesting things to talk about at the show.

I met everyone from Liam Casey - the Imonology who travelled 31 hours to be in Dublin and meet the type of people who could help get them to the next level.

Add to that 20,000 attendees from companies ranging in size from Google and Amazon to BaseStone, a UK startup which won the Alpha Pitch competition - and focusing on Wi-Fi seems petty and insignificant.
Except it isn't.

Growing pains

I arrived at the event on Tuesday morning at 8am and even then, 90 minutes before founder Paddy Cosgrave walked on to the main stage to open the event officially, the network had crashed.

It just set the wrong impression and for a conference which sells itself as "Europe's largest and most prestigious international start-up competition" it didn't strike the right note.

The crumbling Wi-Fi network was less a reflection of Cosgrave and his team of organisers and more on the speed at which Web Summit has grown.

Four years ago, Web Summit began with 500 people from the burgeoning Irish tech scene meeting in a house in Dublin. To go from that to 20,000 attendees including some of the biggest names from the worlds of technology, media and entertainment is a remarkable success and something to be hugely proud of - but with such rapid growth comes ever bigger problems.

Along with the Wi-Fi, there were some other growing pains.

I spoke with Drop, a company launching a Bluetooth-connected weighing scales and recipe platform, on the Food Stage on Tuesday morning and as Ben Harris and I were preparing for our demo, the stage was still being built around us.

Control

The Web Summit was made possible by 1,500 volunteers who gave of their time in return for getting a chance to see people and presentations that would otherwise would have been off-limits.

Clearly Cosgrave has been able to bring people with him on his journey but it would have been helpful to give his army of volunteers a little bit more instruction - or in some cases, any instruction.

In fairness to Cosgrave, he didn't shy away from the problems with the Wi-Fi at the conference and on Tuesday on the main stage revealed that this was a problem the organisers tried to head-off but the people who run the RDS where the event takes place wouldn't allow them to take control of the network.

Later in the week Cosgrove was reported as saying that the future of the Web Summit in Ireland was at risk if the Wi-Fi problem wasn't solved.

And that, for Ireland, would be a disaster.

Stimulating

There would be many countries in Europe who would welcome Cosgrove and his Web Summit with open arms because, for all the problems which beset the conference this week, they were insignificant compared to the wealth of fascinating, stimulating and surprising talks, people and companies which gathered in Dublin.

Cosgrave clearly has the ability to attract a huge amount of influential people to his side and for Ireland it is a huge chance to showcase its potential for companies who may otherwise never consider setting up in the country.

The story of Uber getting a $26 million investment over a pint of Guinness at a previous Web Summit may have been told one too many times by Cosgrave during the week, but it serves as a clear indication of just how important this conference is, and why sorting out the Wi-Fi is more important than just allowing people to post selfies on Twitter.

Google profits slide 5%, missing analyst estimates

Google has reported third-quarter profits of $2.8bn (£1.7bn), down 5% from the same period a year earlier.

That sent shares in the internet giant down over 3% in after-hours trading.

A closely-watched figure - the average cost-per-click that Google - decreased by 2%.

The company also missed analyst expectations for revenue, which increased by 20% to $16.52bn for the period, which was for the three months ending on 30 September 2014.

"We continue to be excited about the growth in our advertising and emerging businesses," said Google chief financial officer Patrick Pichette in a statement accompanying the earnings statement.

Google's profits were also hit by increasing costs of real estate, such as data centres, and hardware inventory costs, which increased by 37% to $3.35bn from the same period a year earlier.

Although Google makes the majority of its revenue from the advertising it places on its search site and others, the technology giant has been looking to expand its offerings.

On Wednesday, it unveiled new models of its Nexus phone and tablet devices, as well as a new version of its Android operating system.

Google Glass User is First Patient Diagnosed with Internet Addiction Disorder

The 31-year-old Google Glass throughout the day and removed it only while sleeping and bathing.
He had checked into a center for alcoholism treatment in 2013, and the facility not only mandates patients to stay away from all addictions but also takes away electronic devices.

Doctors reportedly witnessed seeing the man tapping his right temple with his index finger repeatedly – and said the involuntary movement was how he used to switch on the heads-up display on his Google Glass.

In a bizarre twist, the man even reported of experiencing his dreams as if he was viewing them through the device's grey window.

The man eventually complained of feeling irritable and argumentative after the device was taken away from him.

Dr. Andrew Doan, head of addictions and resilience research at the US navy's Substance Abuse and Recovery Programme (Sarp) believes a growing number of people are suffering from Internet addiction.

"People used to believe alcoholism wasn't a problem – they blamed the person or the people around them. It's just going to take a while for us to realise that this is real," said Dr. Doan.

The Google Glass addict complained to Dr. Doan that, "the Google Glass withdrawal was greater than the alcohol withdrawal he was experiencing."

"There's nothing inherently bad about Google Glass. For an individual who's looking to escape, for an individual who has underlying mental dysregulation, for people with a predisposition for addiction, technology provides a very convenient way to access these rushes. 

And the danger with wearable technology is that you're allowed to be almost constantly in the closet, while appearing like you're present in the moment," said Dr. Doan.

Numerous psychiatrists have shunned the conventional electronic gadgets, like PCs, tablets and cell phones that have gripped both adults and children's lives.

Daria Kuss, an Internet addiction researcher at the Nottingham Trent University says that while Internet addiction is on the rise, more research is needed to effectively diagnose and treat suffering patients.

Russian hackers target NATO, Ukraine and others - iSight

Russian hackers exploited a bug in Microsoft Windows and other software to spy on computers used by NATO, the European Union, Ukraine and companies in the energy and telecommunications sectors, according to cyber intelligence firm iSight Partners. 

ISight said it did not know what data had been found by the hackers, though it suspected they were seeking information on the Ukraine crisis, as well as diplomatic, energy and telecom issues, based on the targets and the contents of phishing emails used to infect computers with tainted files.

The five-year cyber espionage campaign is still going on, according to iSight, which dubbed the operation "Sandworm Team" because it found references to the "Dune" science fiction series in the software code used by the hackers.

The operation used a variety of ways to attack the targets over the years, iSight said, adding that the hackers began only in August to exploit a vulnerability found in most versions of Windows. 

ISight said it told Microsoft Corp about the bug and held off on disclosing the problem so the software maker had time to fix it.

A Microsoft spokesman said the company plans to roll out an automatic update to affected versions of Windows on Tuesday.

There was no immediate comment from the Russian government, NATO, the EU or the Ukraine government. 

Researchers with Dallas-based iSight said they believed the hackers are Russian because of language clues in the software code and because of their choice of targets. 

"Your targets almost certainly have to do with your interests. We see strong ties to Russian origins here," said John Hultquist, head of iSight's cyber espionage practice. The firm plans to release a 16-page report on Sandworm Team to its clients on Tuesday. 

While technical indicators do not indicate whether the hackers have ties to the Russian government, Hultquist said he believed they were supported by a nation state because they were engaging in espionage, not cyber crime.

For example, in December 2013, NATO was targeted with a malicious document on European diplomacy. Several regional governments in the Ukraine and an academic working on Russian issues in the United States were sent tainted emails that claimed to contain a list of pro-Russian extremist activities, according to iSight.

The firm said its researchers uncovered evidence that some Ukrainian government computer systems were infected, but they were unable to remotely confirm specific victims among those systems that had been targeted. 

Still, researchers believe a large percentage of those targeted systems were infected because the malicious software used was very sophisticated, using a previously unknown attack method that enabled it to get past virtually all known security protections, said Drew Robinson, a senior technical analyst with iSight Partners.

Samsung Accelerates Wi-Fi Speeds

Samsung claims to have found a way to make wi-fi data travel five times faster than it does currently, as reported by BBC News. 

It said its engineers had overcome two significant technical problems that had restricted the transfer of data at well below its theoretical limit of 4.6Gbps.

If the technology lives up to its promise, it would mean a 1GB file could be transferred in less than three seconds.

Experts said it could take time for the tech to be built in to gadgets.

In a short statement, Samsung said its engineers were working on wi-fi that operated in the 60GHz band.

Current wi-fi systems use 2.4 and 5GHz bands, and some can operate at speeds in excess of 1Gb per second.

Samsung said it had managed to limit the amount of interference data travelling on different channels, suffered when many devices were connected to a wi-fi hub or hotspot.

In addition, improvements to antenna had helped signals travel further and be less susceptible to getting lost while travelling. The breakthroughs mean data could travel at a rate of 575MBps (4.6Gbps).

The first devices built to use the 60GHz wi-fi standard are expected to appear in 2015. Samsung said it was planning to include the technology in TVs, medical devices, phones and smart home appliances.

"With more and more of us using a wide variety of different devices to access our photos, video, and personal data the ability to quickly transfer that data between devices is going to become even more important in the future," said Stuart Miles, founder of tech news site Pocket-lint.

"Having faster speeds will help that drastically," he said, adding that decisions still needed to be taken on frequency allocations and devices that could use the technology still needed to be built.

"It will take a couple of years for this technology to filter through to our every day lives," he said.
